What you're looking at, and the work it usually needs
The numbers match the drawing at the top of the page. Plenty of driveways and lots show two or three of these at once. When yours does, the deepest one decides the job.
An open crack you can see down into
Rain runs straight down a crack like that to the stone base and softens it from underneath. Start with crack sealing and filling, the quickest fix on this page. Cracks that have joined into a web are number 4.
Gray and faded, but still flat
The sun has dried out the bitumen, the black binder at the top of the asphalt, but the pavement under it is still sound. That's the job for sealcoating. Worn rough, not just faded? The questions at the bottom of the page cover that.
A pothole, or a spot that's sunk
Water got under that spot and the base gave way. A bag of patch mix tamped into the hole is a stopgap. Professional asphalt repair fixes the base under it, too.
Cracked all over, like a turtle's back
That's alligator cracking. It means the base has failed, not just the top, so a coat of sealer or a new layer won't hold on it. A small area is an asphalt repair. Spread across most of your drive or lot? See repair or replace near the bottom of the page.
Gravel you're tired of grading
Ruts after every rain, washouts, stone tracked into the house. Often the gravel you've got becomes the base for a new asphalt driveway, once it's reshaped and compacted. On a long country drive, tar and chip is the other option, and the questions below weigh the two.
Lines you can barely see
Worn stall lines, an accessible space nobody can make out, a fire lane that's just a faded curb. Line striping repaints the layout you've got, or lays the lot out again if the way it's used has changed.
Bare ground, or nothing worth saving
A new drive, a new lot, a lane out to a shop, or a surface that's failed from end to end. That's asphalt paving, built from the ground up. For a business or a church, start with parking lots.

New surfaces: asphalt paving, driveways, and chip seal
For bare ground, gravel you're done with, or asphalt that's failed all the way down. Each of these builds a new surface, so most of an asphalt paving project happens before anything black shows up.
Asphalt Paving
New asphalt pavement built in order: the grade and drainage, a compacted stone base, then hot mix asphalt concrete rolled to the thickness on your quote, in inches, compacted. The right call when there's nothing underneath worth keeping, including new construction for a builder or general contractor.
Residential Driveways
Asphalt driveway services for homes: new driveways, gravel-to-asphalt conversions, and tear-out-and-replace jobs. Call about one when the drive is sinking, breaking up where it meets the street, or you're done hauling gravel.
Tar and Chip
Chip seal: liquid asphalt sprayed over a compacted base, with stone chips rolled into it and the loose ones swept off. A surface for long drives, private roads, and farm lanes.
| Work | General range |
|---|---|
| New asphalt paving or driveway | $5–$15 per sq ft |
| Tar and chip | $2.50–$7 per sq ft |
The final price depends on the job: its size, what has to come out first, how easy it is to reach, and how much work the ground needs. Your written estimate is free. (501) 506-6799
Asphalt repair and upkeep for the pavement you have
When the base is still sound, you don't need to start over. These four fixes work at different depths. The drawing shows how far down each one reaches, with new paving (E) beside them for comparison.
- Sealcoating: on the surface only.
- Crack sealing: down into the crack, so water can't reach the base.
- Overlay: new asphalt on top. The old base stays.
- Repair: rebuilt through the base, in one spot.
- New paving: everything, from the ground up.
Crack Sealing and Filling
Sealant worked into open cracks so water can't reach the base. It's the right call as soon as a crack opens, ideally before winter.
Sealcoating
A protective coat for asphalt that's gone gray but hasn't broken up. It keeps sun and rain off a sound asphalt surface and leaves it dark again.
Asphalt Repair
Potholes, sunken spots, and failed sections on a driveway or a lot, cut out as far down as the damage goes, rebuilt, and rolled level with the pavement around them.
Overlay and Resurfacing
A new layer of hot mix over the old surface, tied in where it meets the street, a concrete slab, or older pavement. Over a failed base, the old cracks come back up through it.
| Work | General range |
|---|---|
| Crack filling | $1–$5 per linear ft |
| Sealcoating | $0.20–$0.75 per sq ft |
| Repair and patching | $3–$15 per sq ft |
| A single pothole, most jobs | $150–$600 |
| Overlay or resurfacing | $3–$9 per sq ft |
The final price depends on the job: how much of the surface needs work, the shape the base is in, and how easy it is to get equipment to. (501) 506-6799
Commercial asphalt: parking lot paving, striping, and upkeep
For businesses, churches, and towns. Property managers, business owners, and city public works departments usually need some of all three: the pavement, the lines, and a plan for keeping both in shape.
Parking Lots
Parking lot paving for commercial properties: new lots, full replacements, and mill-and-overlay work, planned around the traffic that uses them and where the water drains. The right call when patching can't keep up anymore.
Line Striping
Stall lines, accessible spaces with their access aisles, arrows, and fire lanes, repainted or laid out fresh. Call when drivers are guessing where to park, or after the lot's been sealed or repaved.
Asphalt Maintenance
Parking lot maintenance planned as one job: patching, crack filling, sealcoating, and restriping for a commercial lot. It's priced from those four services, so their ranges on this page apply.
| Work | General range |
|---|---|
| Parking lot, new or full replacement | $3–$10 per sq ft |
| Parking lot mill and overlay | $2–$6 per sq ft |
| Line striping | $4–$15 per stall |
| Accessible (ADA) stall | $30–$90 per stall |
| Striping, small-job minimum | $300–$600 |
The final price depends on the job: the lot's size and layout, the condition of the pavement, and how much of it needs work. (501) 506-6799

One asphalt company for all ten
This page sorts problems by what's underneath them. Whether a cracked lot needs sealer or a new base is a question about the ground before it's a sales one, and it's worth asking any asphalt paving contractor before you sign.
Because Alec's Asphalt Paving does all ten kinds of work, residential and commercial, the estimate can name the smaller fix when the smaller fix will do. Craftsmanship on asphalt is mostly out of sight, too: a long-lasting surface comes from the base and the drainage as much as from a smooth finish.

Paving services in Little Rock and every town in Arkansas
All ten services run statewide from our yard in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Which service matters most where you are
- Ozarks and north
- The longest winters in the state, with the first freeze by the last week of October. Sealing cracks before then does the most good.
- The middle of the state
- Around Little Rock, a normal freeze window from about November 10 to March 21, and July highs near 92°F. Crack sealing for the winter, sealcoating against the sun.
- South and the Delta
- Short winters, long hot summers, and heavy trucks that push a soft road surface into ruts. On lots and farm lanes, the base and the thickness carry the most weight.

Choosing between asphalt services
Should I repair or replace my asphalt driveway?
Repair it if the damage sits in one area and the rest is sound. Replace it when the base has given out under most of it. Patching the same drive year after year adds up, and every patch leaves a seam where water can find its way in. If repair estimates are creeping toward the cost of a new drive, ask your asphalt contractor for both numbers side by side.
Should I sealcoat or resurface my driveway?
Sealcoat it if it's only faded. Resurface it if it's worn rough but the base under it is still solid. A sealcoat adds a protective coat, not new asphalt, so it can't smooth a rough surface or fill a low spot. An overlay adds a new layer of hot mix that can.
Is tar and chip better than asphalt for a long driveway?
For a long rural drive or a farm lane, it often is. It costs less per square foot (compare the two in the price table above), and on a long run that adds up. It's rougher and stonier underfoot, though, so for a short drive or anywhere people walk, play, or push carts, hot mix asphalt is easier to live with.
What order should patching, crack filling, sealcoating, and striping go in?
Patches first, then cracks, then sealcoat, then stripes. Patching cuts old pavement out, so it goes before anyone fills a crack nearby, and the seams around each new patch get filled with the rest. Sealer spread over an open crack just hides it, and fresh stripes painted before a sealcoat get covered up.
